It was SO wonderful to see the ladies receive their machines and the material that was donated to them.  The experience of eating breakfast in a ‘restaurant’ with us at the KZNIB meeting is such a highlight for them that the added surprise of being given this valuable gift overwhelmed them. While they struggle publically to express their incredible gratitude I can vouch that they were absolutely thrilled!!! Thank you to everyone at KZNWIB who made this possible.

KZNWIB was instrumental in assisting three of the ladies we support and one of their young sons with free eye tests and new glasses. This was thanks to Execuspecs’s Misha Walker who we met at a previous KZNWIB meeting. We are very grateful to Misha for their generous assistance. The literacy and numeracy teacher had picked up that they could not see properly during their Saturday classes. The ladies are so thankful to be able to see properly – it makes a huge difference in their lives. (see Debra, her son Craig and Katie in the photo below)

Also huge thanks to all the ladies who bring us groceries towards the monthly food parcels for the ladies we support – it is such a practical way of making a difference in their lives. Goodwill and the ladies themselves really appreciate it.

Goodwill had an excellent month in terms of finding employment for people – over the past few weeks we have seen 35 new jobs for unemployed people,  10 of these being permanent employment.

We also had a very positive meeting this month with the Head of Skills Development for eThekwini Municipality and her team regarding the establishment of a Job Centre to link unemployed people with vacancies in businesses.

Another exciting development is a recent meeting with Microsoft where they indicated that they would like to start a programme to assist in the upskilling of unemployed people to use computers. They would then link them with work in local call centres. This initiative would form part of the Smartcity project in Durban. Goodwill is pursuing this opportunity with them.

Our thanks to everyone at KZNWIB for their generosity and love.

Tarin Green (supporter of Goodwill Industries) handing over an over-lock machine and cotton to Katie Osman of Goodwill Industries (machine donated by Del Menzies)

Lynn Westusen and Sharon Walsh handing over an Elna sewing machine to Talent of Goodwill Industries (the donation by Association of Women In Insurance)

Darlene handing over the KZNWIB monthly food parcels to Debra (with her grandchild on her back), Linda and Katie

We are very excited that Bronwyn Bath (Creative I) and Candice Turnbull (CLT Solutions) have offered their time and skills to design and develop our GOODWILL website!! Huge thanks to them both

We have received an over lock machine from Alison Tate (Tate, Nolan & Knight Inc) for one of our seamstresses – thank you so much Alison, this machine will be put to good use.

News this month from our ‘KZNWIB supported seamstresses’

Our 4 seamstresses are each building their own small business. They sew garments and sell them at the Mansell street market. This month they received an order via Goodwill for the repair of worker overalls for a local building company (Mishi Jones) – they successfully completed the first order and have since received another.
