 2007 CharityMinimize

Please click here for our chosen Charity for 2008.

KZNWIB decided to support a single charity in 2007 in the hope that we would be able make an accountable difference and form a tangible relationship with this organisation on a monthly basis. We try to raise cash funds at each meeting and meet some of the month to month needs of the home and her children.  As such we nominated iThemba Lethu due to the transition nature of the home and their vision of raising the children of our tomorrow ... iThemba Lethu means I have a destiny ! Review from iThemba Lethu on how KZN WIB and its members helped them in 2007:

iThemba Lethu is a registered NPO based in Manor Gardens.  Our mandate is to see the destiny of young children restored.  The Family Integration Programme includes a transition home for babies abandoned and orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS.  The vision of the home is to see babies cared for, nurtured and loved, and then fostered or adopted into suitable families.  Babies are placed in our foster care by various welfare departments.  We then set about finding a permanent home for each child.  The entire process of screening potential families and facilitating the placement, is carried out by our social worker.  We have facilitated the transition of over 48 babies into and out of our transition home since we opened in Nov 2000 - with 8 babies placed in families in 2007.

The second part of the programme includes the Breast Milk Bank which allows breastfeeding moms the opportunity to donate their excess breast milk.  The moms are screened and the milk is pasteurised before being fed to the babies at the transition home.  As the best form of nutrition, the health and well being of the babies significantly improves.Â

In 2007 we received the very good news that a funder would be purchasing a second house on our behalf.  This affords us the opportunity to expand our work and open a second transition home.

The support from KZN WIB during 2007 was overwhelming!  We received monthly financial donations from the organisation after each meeting which went towards the operating costs of running the home.  Furthermore we had a number of volunteers start visiting the home and helping take care of the children.  Another great benefit to our organisation were the numerous in-kind donations that members of the KZN WIB forum made in their individual capacity.  These included a donation of nearly 100 blankets, a Christmas party for the children, a number of donations of clothes and toys, and also domestic appliances for the home.  And that's not all!  Some of the ladies also became our best Public Relations Officers.  In one instance we received a donation of R5 000 from an organisation in Johannesburg and we were able to trace it back to a lady from KZN WIB who had told the chap in Jhb about our transition home and he had decided that he wanted to support the initiative.  And there are numerous other such stories.

The support of the KZN WIB ladies has been a delightful blessing to our organisation.  A group of ladies who offer encouragement and kind word at every turn was a gift throughout the year.  We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast meetings each month and the friendships that have formed.Â

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the incredible generosity and the wonderful support in 2007!
With kind regards
Glenda
